The tilting of America’s population

There is a fascinating article in today’s Financial Times about the latest American population census findings. If Kansas is taken as a central pivot (its population has remained roughly the same over the past ten years), then America’s population has tilted heavily down and to the left over the past ten years, with Americans moving from north to south and from east to west. The shift reflects social and economic changes, including the decline of traditional heavy industries in the north-east and the shift of retirees to the south. Fewer immigrants come across the Atlantic and more arrive from Latin America and the Pacific. Overall, fertility and immigration remain high. America continues to grow…
